  • Utilities: Utility costs will vary city by city and can change dramatically when moving to a smaller or larger home. There maybe fees involved in transferring your energy, phone, pay TV and internet accounts.
  • Moving services: A large portion of your moving expenses will be allotted to hiring removalists. In this portion of your budget, you will need to factor in the cost of packaging materials, the cost of renting a truck or hiring a moving service and moving costs for any meals on moving day.
  • Transportation: If you're moving a long distance, moving costs can quickly add up. You will need to account for airfare, petrol, and any hotel stays for you and your family along the way.

    Additionally, if you have pets, they may require special transportation on an airplane or incur extra charges when staying at a hotel.
  • Pet care: During a big move, it's not a good idea to have pets loose and under the feet of the movers. Not only is it dangerous for your pets, but it can also hold up the movers or cause them to accidentally drop your furniture.

    Consider paying extra to board your pets at a kennel on moving day and factor those moving costs into your total budget.

In order to greatly minimise your moving expenses, it's important to shop around with different moving services before making a final selection.

If you're moving cross-country, it may be more economical to ship all of your belongings and travel separately. If you're moving within your city, you can rent a moving truck yourself to save extra money.
