Top questions to ask removalists before hiring them

One of the major decisions anyone makes when moving house, is selecting a moving service. Considering the responsibilities one bestows on removalists, it is not uncommon to be hesitant in making a decision on which service to go with.

Therefore it is worth taking the time to think carefully and put together a list of relevant questions to ask removal services before hiring them. You'll need to be confident when you do hire them that they meet and satisfy all your requirements for the move.

There are numerous questions that are very important that need to be asked, along with anything else that is of particular concern to you:

  1. Are there charges not included in the quote? The last thing you would want to find out at the very last minute is late disclosure of hidden fees and charges.

Try to ensure when you are getting quotes from competing removalists that you directly ask them if there's potential for any additional costs to be involved with their service.

Find out what is not included and as a conservative measure add it to the total cost, before deciding which removalist you want to hire.
  2. Is the deposit refundable? If a deposit is a compulsory requisite from a removalist before they committ to the job, then it is worthwhile to make sure that all of the terms of payment and refund are very clear from the outset.

For example there could be a potential scenario of either you will get your deposit back once you have paid for the service or the deposit will be taken off your final bill.
  3. What is your liability cover? Some removalists don't cover you for any damage to your goods if you have packed them yourself.

Some removalists only accept liability for goods that were clearly damaged due to their involvement (a potentially grey area) so it is important to know the extent of the liability right from the beginning.
  4. Can I see some references? Removalists that posess readily available references can potentially stand out from the pack. The fact that they can produce them further strengthens their credibility and you will feel inclined to favour them over other potential candidates that don't produce references.

It pays to take the time to ask as many relevant questions to a removalist to help you decide if they are right for you.
