House movers: What they will and won’t do

While many house movers advertise to do "anything and everything" to help you in your relocation, it is important to read between the lines. Although not all moving companies are created equal, there are specific guidelines that home movers adhere to when transporting your belongings.

What house movers will do

Prior to your home moving day, your movers will prepare in advance by assessing your household in-person. This will allow a moving company to give you a better estimate of the total cost of your move, coupled with the distance of your relocation.

On moving day, house movers are responsible for transporting your belongings from your old house to your new home. Your home movers will organise all your boxes and furniture to load them safely into the moving truck.

A quality moving service will also keep an inventory of all your goods in case anything gets lost or damaged. Once everything is loaded into the truck, the movers are completely responsible for ensuring that your belongings arrive safely and on time to your destination.

After arriving at your new home, your house movers will unload your boxes and furniture into the right rooms. If you have booked a complete unpacking service, the relocationists will unpack your boxes for you after they have been unloaded.

Last but not least, movers will collect their payment and have you sign the appropriate documents to certify that all your belongings have arrived at your new home safely.

What house movers will not do

Although relocationists provide professional support for your move, there are a few tasks that movers are not responsible for on moving day:

  • Moving dangerous items. Relocationists not responsible for moving any items that are hazardous, flammable, or explosive since they are illegal for a moving service to transport.
  • Moving perishable items. Any items in your freezer or refrigerator should be emptied 24 hours prior to moving day. If you're moving a long distance, do not pack perishable items that could spoil in transit.
  • Moving broken, damaged boxes. Depending on the company, many relocationists will refuse to load boxes that are broken and do not support the belongings packed inside.

If you are concerned about the quality of your boxes, purchase new boxes from your moving service or schedule movers to pack your belongings for you.
